27 | Dylan

A hot shower and the light of a new day failed to chase the shadows from Dylan’s thoughts. Three attempts on Jane’s life, and three mysterious deaths within seventy-two hours of the near misses. If it weren’t for the impossibility of Dalton being killed by a bullet fired from his own gun, Dylan might have chalked up the deaths to coincidence or a cold-blooded revenge killer on the loose. But neither explanation fit the scenarios, and no amount of shaking his head changed the facts. Jane simply had to know something about the charmed life she led. He intended to find out. The men on trial for kidnapping her should have been bloody thankful they hadn’t followed through on killing her. Jesus, he really was losing it.

A text message came in as he exited his hotel room. The Vancouver team had an update on the ghost-gun supplier from the dark web.

Dylan climbed into the passenger seat of their SUV. “You got the team’s message?”

Viktor scowled. “You think they’d send it to you and not me?”

“Would you prefer I not check?” That earned him a grumble. If there was any way of taking Dylan’s words the wrong way, Viktor would find it. “Where did you go last night?”

“Out.”

Dylan rolled his hand impatiently. “With? Where?”

“Stop digging. If I learn something, you’ll be the first one I tell.”

He’d have better odds of scaling Mount Everest in an afternoon. And sadly, those were the same odds that he and Viktor would be able to work together anytime soon. Maybe shooting him so he could get his own Medal of Valour hadn’t been such a bad idea.

Bear was waiting for them in the meeting room at the head of the conference table. The Vancouver team had already gathered and was visible on the smart board’s live feed.

Olsen addressed Viktor and Dylan as they took their seats. “Jenko, O’Brien, settle in. The 3D ghost-gun supplier that Jeremy Nolan hooked last week on the dark web has agreed to a show and tell. The meet is set for 1800 hours today at a roadside cafe outside of Claresholm, Alberta. Nolan will take the lead. Claresholm’s RCMP detachment is providing inter-provincial assistance. Nolan?”

Jeremy took control of the remote and flipped the feed to a map of western Alberta. “Claresholm is a twenty-minute drive north on Highway 2 from Crowsnest Highway, where Piedfort went on walkabout for an hour. The Claresholm support team is meeting us at the Calgary airport this morning. We should be on site by 1400 hours latest. We’ll scope the cafe and coordinate intel collection on everyone at or near the place within an hour of our scheduled meet.” He split the screen with an outdoor shot of the cafe. “Tonight’s goal is to buy the gun and express interest in ordering more. These 3D units are highly portable, so we can’t risk them finding a GPS tracker in the cash and scaring them off. If I can get a tracker on their vehicle, I will, but not at the expense of our long-term goal of getting our hands on that printer.
